On Energy Balance, Macros and Nutrient Density

ENERGY VALUE OF FOOD

The food that we eat contains what’s known as potential energy. Potential energy, by definition, is energy that’s stored in a physical system and has the potential to be converted into energy.
With most energy systems, the standard unit of measure for potential energy is the joule. Although some scientists use joules to describe the amount of potential energy in food; it’s still most common to measure this energy in Calories.

On Keto Flu and Electrolyte Imbalances

The “Keto Flu”

During the induction phase of a Ketogenic Diet, or even a Low-carb, Paleo Diet, some people may experience “flu” like symptoms (tiredness, lethargy, shortness of breath, even arrhythmia) that often makes one believe that what they are doing is not right for their bodies.

This “flu” is a manifestation of both mental and physical dependence on carbohydrates as the body is essentially going through a phase where it has to learn (or better said, re-learn) to use fats as fuel.

Tiredness and Lethargy

Most people who do a Ketogenic or Paleo Diet, initially end up cutting…

Chase Results, Not Ketones

In their myopic “chasing of ketones”, a lot of low carbers have been decieved into chasing ketones, instead of results.

They forget why they even started Keto in the first place, and in most cases, they did so to lose weight (yes, there are other valid approaches such as increased mind focus, treating a neurological illness, etc… but those are not the topic here). You don’t need to “eat fat to burn fat”… even on keto, you still need a negative energy balance.

Fat Bombs / Fat Coffee have become the bane of ketogenic diets.

The correct formula to apply…

Ignorance Is But A Choice

I want to share this quote here, especially with the influx of new people who have just recently joined the various online groups we manage:

“In the age of information, ignorance is a choice” – Donnie Miller

One of the main reasons that got me into nutrition and fitness in the first place, and eventually led me to found Ketogains, was to learn to differentiate between sound, science based nutrition, and “old wives tales” or classic bro’science.

Everybody has seen the recent influx of a number of self called “Keto Trainers” or “Ketogenic Coaches” as well as…

Everybody is worried about Cholesterol. You are; your doctor, your family. Yet few can explain how it actually relates to Cardio Vascular Disease, and what can you do to prevent it.
